Kidney Surgery
Kidney surgeries focus on the treatment of conditions affecting the kidneys, such as cancer, stones, and infections.
- Nephrectomy: Removal of a kidney, usually performed to treat kidney cancer or other severe conditions like trauma or chronic disease.
- Radical Nephrectomy: Complete removal of the kidney along with surrounding tissues (e.g., adrenal gland, lymph nodes) when cancer is present.
- Partial Nephrectomy: Removal of only the tumor or diseased part of the kidney, preserving healthy tissue.
- Kidney Stone Surgery:
- Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL): A non-invasive procedure using shock waves to break kidney stones into smaller fragments that can be passed through urine.
- Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL): A minimally invasive procedure where a small incision is made in the back to remove large kidney stones using a nephroscope.
- Ureteroscopy: A procedure where a thin tube (ureteroscope) is inserted into the urinary tract to remove stones from the kidneys or ureters..
- Kidney Biopsy: Removal of a small sample of kidney tissue to diagnose kidney disease or abnormal growth.
Bladder Surgery
Bladder surgeries address conditions affecting the bladder, such as cancer, infections, and incontinence.
- Cystectomy: Removal of part or all of the bladder, typically done in cases of bladder cancer.
- Partial Cystectomy: Removal of part of the bladder while preserving its function.
- Radical Cystectomy: Removal of the entire bladder, typically for advanced bladder cancer. A urinary diversion (such as an ileal conduit or neobladder) is performed to create a new way for urine to exit the body.
- Cystolitholapaxy: A procedure to break down and remove bladder stones using a cystoscope. It is typically done under general anesthesia.
- Bladder Suspension Surgery: Surgical procedures to treat urinary incontinence or pelvic organ prolapse by suspending the bladder and restoring its normal function.
- Bladder Augmentation (Cystoplasty): Surgery to enlarge the bladder, often done for patients with bladder dysfunction, such as small bladder capacity due to neurogenic bladder or congenital conditions.
- Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor (TURBT): A procedure where tumors in the bladder are removed using a special instrument inserted through the urethra. It is often used for bladder cancer treatment.
Prostate Surgery
Prostate surgeries treat conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate cancer, and other prostate-related issues.
- Prostatectomy: Surgical removal of the prostate gland, often done to treat prostate cancer.
- Radical Prostatectomy: Removal of the entire prostate gland along with surrounding tissue, often done for localized prostate cancer. It can be performed via traditional open surgery, laparoscopically, or robot-assisted surgery.
- Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP): A minimally invasive procedure where a portion of the prostate is removed through the urethra, often done for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) to relieve urinary obstruction.
- Prostate Biopsy: A procedure where tissue samples are taken from the prostate gland to check for cancer or other conditions. It is often guided by ultrasound or MRI.
- Laser Prostate Surgery: Laser energy is used to vaporize or shrink prostate tissue, reducing the size of the prostate and relieving symptoms of BPH. Common types include GreenLight laser prostatectomy and Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP).
Urethral Surgery
Urethral surgeries address conditions affecting the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body.
- Urethrectomy: Removal of part or all of the urethra, typically due to injury or disease, such as urethral cancer or strictures.
- Urethroplasty: Surgical repair or reconstruction of the urethra, often done to treat urethral strictures (narrowing of the urethra), which can result from injury, infection, or surgery.
- Transurethral Resection of Urethral Stricture (TURP for Urethra): Removal of a stricture (narrowing) in the urethra to improve urine flow.
Male Reproductive Surgery
These surgeries are focused on treating conditions affecting the male reproductive organs, including the testes, penis, and erectile dysfunction.
- Vasectomy: A minor surgical procedure to cut and seal the vas deferens, effectively sterilizing the male and preventing sperm from being released during ejaculation.
- Vasovasostomy: Surgical reversal of a vasectomy to restore fertility.
- Orchiectomy: Removal of one or both testes, often performed to treat testicular cancer or in cases of hormone therapy for prostate cancer.
- Penile Prosthesis Surgery: Insertion of an inflatable or malleable prosthetic device into the penis to treat erectile dysfunction that does not respond to other treatments.
- Testicular Biopsy: A procedure to remove a small sample of tissue from the testicles for examination, typically to assess male infertility.
- Hydrocelectomy: Removal of a hydrocele, a fluid-filled sac surrounding the testes that can cause swelling.
- Circumcision: Surgical removal of the foreskin of the penis, often done for medical or cultural reasons.
Urinary Tract Surgery
Urinary tract surgeries treat infections, injuries, or congenital abnormalities affecting the kidneys, bladder, ureters, or urethra.
- Ureteroscopy: A procedure to examine and treat problems within the ureters or kidneys, such as removing kidney stones or treating tumors. A small, flexible camera (ureteroscope) is inserted through the urethra to the ureter.
- Pyeloplasty: Surgical correction of a blockage or narrowing in the renal pelvis (where the kidney and ureter meet), typically done to treat hydronephrosis or ureteropelvic junction obstruction.
- Nephrostomy Tube Placement: Insertion of a tube into the kidney to drain urine when the normal flow is obstructed, often used for severe urinary tract obstructions or infections.
- Urinary Diversion: Surgical creation of a new route for urine to exit the body, typically done after cystectomy (removal of the bladder) or for patients with neurogenic bladder dysfunction.
- Ileal Conduit: A piece of the small intestine is used to create a stoma (opening) for urine to be diverted outside the body.
- Neobladder: A new bladder is created from a portion of the intestine, allowing the patient to urinate normally through the urethra.
Adrenal Gland Surgery
Surgical procedures on the adrenal glands, which are located above the kidneys, treat conditions such as tumors, hyperplasia, or adrenal cancer.
- Adrenalectomy: Removal of one or both adrenal glands, often done to treat adrenal tumors, adrenal cancer, or overproduction of hormones (e.g., Cushing’s syndrome or pheochromocytoma).
- Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy: A minimally invasive procedure to remove the adrenal gland using small incisions and a laparoscope, which reduces recovery time and surgical risks.
Laparoscopic and Urologic Surgery
Advances in minimally invasive techniques have made it possible to perform many urologic surgeries with less tissue disruption, faster recovery, and fewer complications.
- Laparoscopic Nephrectomy: A minimally invasive procedure to remove a kidney, typically used for kidney cancer or non-cancerous conditions.
Urologic Cancer Surgery
Urologic surgeries are performed to treat cancers of the kidney, bladder, prostate, testes, and other urological organs.
- Radical Cystectomy: Removal of the bladder for patients with invasive bladder cancer, often accompanied by urinary diversion.
- Radical Prostatectomy: Removal of the prostate gland for patients with prostate cancer.
- Nephrectomy: Removal of the kidney for kidney cancer or other malignancies.
- Orchiectomy: Removal of the testes, typically performed in the case of testicular cancer.
Urologic surgery encompasses a wide variety of procedures aimed at addressing both functional and malignant disorders of the urinary system and male reproductive organs. From minimally invasive techniques like laparoscopy
